Sea Trout fishing

The Sea Trout is in fact merely our native Brown Trout, salmo trutta, that has evolved an ability to go to sea to feed and then return to the river of its birth to spawn as do only a small number of so called anadromous fish such as salmon and shad.

Often referred to as the enigmatic fish, the fascination for catching them can be very exciting and very addictive.

The very best of Sea Trout fishing in the UK will require you to learn how to fish for them at night and because the best conditions will be the darkest of nights you will need to be comfortable with all that this entails.

It is one thing to be able to fish on a nice day with plenty of water in front of you, but quite another to do it in the dark, on a river and under overhanging trees, which is usually where the big sea-trout lie. But should the miracle happen and your fly goes into the water instead of the branches and you are in the right place at the right time, there follows a fight, the likes of which you will seldom better.

Pat O’reilly

The best Sea Trout fishing in the UK is undoubtedly in Wales and my good friend Pat O’reilly is probably the most experienced Sea Trout fisher in the business of teaching you how to do it. You can reach him and find out more about his courses here. Oh and by the way his wife Sue is also an instructor in her own right, so if you ladies would prefer to be taught by a woman instead of a man – yes yes I know I am not really supposed to say that these days – give them a shout... www.first-nature.com/dreamstreams

If on the other hand you fancy catching big Sea Trout during the day you can, at a price, travel for them as I have done as far afield as Tierra del Fuego (Cape Horn or as near as) at the bottom end of Argentina or go to Iceland.
